Spring Forward

On Spring Forward Day 2017 at Appalachian State University, I attended the digital marketing and social media workshop led by alumnae Sarah Kasper. I chose to attend this particular workshop because I am a marketing minor and I have managed social media accounts for several organizations on campus as well as a business. Sarah Kasper serves as the social media specialist for a mortgage company and handles all of their Internet communication.

Sarah did not always want to work in this field; while she was still in college she wanted to be an event planner. Through trial and error she finally got to where she is now and is very pleased with her job. One thing she stressed in her workshop that stood out to me is that while your still in college or even after college, you do not have to have your whole life plan and career path figured out. She said she jumped around and played a few different roles in her adult life but she eventually ended up where she was supposed to be. I think that was so important for her to say to a room full of seniors because we are all stressed with the idea of life outside of college. Another thing that Sarah pointed out was the fact that all companies are really pushing and really wanting to do video content these days. Social media platforms are very video heavy today because people do not want to have to read something, they would rather watch it. Being an Electronic Media and Broadcasting major, that was good to hear that companies will be looking for people who can produce and edit video content.

I really enjoyed this workshop because Sarah did not just come in and talk about her job, she really related to the students by mentioning her struggles and fears and how to become successful in life after college. She was extremely personable and that helped me to be engaged in her presentation and really want to know more about content marketing.
